HCL paper at Chennai on 10 July 2010

Hi I'm an Electronics and communication engineering graduate from tagore engineering college, chennai. I attended aspiring minds computer based test and got selected in HCL technologies on 3rd August, 2010. I'm here to share my experience.

Day 1(Computer Based Test):
Test was conducted for 5 days from 10th July, 2010 to 15th July, 2010. I attended on 12th July, 2010 8:00 A.M batch. Test was okay. I didn't prepare much because I studied for many other companies placement tests. So just went through jwjobs.net papers and important topics from R.S.Aggrawal aptitude book. Basic questions were asked it was not easy and one cannot say tough also. This was my first computer based test so I feeling was uncomfortable especially in reading section. I had no hope in clearing because 10000+ students might have attended and if test was easy cut off will be high. Luckily I cleared the test.
So to clear aspiring minds go through R.S.Aggrawal regularly and of course luck must also favour you.

Day 2(Technical Group Discussion):
On 27th July, 2010 I received mail from aspiring minds that I cleared aptitude. I was one among 15% of the candidates all over India who wrote aspiring minds. But I checked mail only on 29th evening and GD schedule was on 31st July at 11:00 A.M. I had 1 day left so I prepared only for interview by refreshing topics from electronic devices, 8085, 8051, C and basics of C++.

I reached college by 10:00 A.M stood in queue for registration. Morning 8:00 A.M batch GD was happening inside. And the candidates with offer letter from other companies who cleared CBT were attending HR round directly.

At 11:30 A.M technical GD started. There were 7 member s in group and two HRs. Topic for discussion was SOFTWARE TESTING. I got scared because I was the only candidate from electronics background. But thank god it was not like GD but lecture. They took class on the topic and were asking questions in between. Others were answering properly but I gave answers in layman terms. But I made sure that I was in the discussion by asking doubts frequently to make my presence felt. From my group all of us got selected for next round.

So if you are going to face technical GD just relax even if you don’t know the topic. Be a good listener, be a team player, ask doubts and make sure whatever you answer must be crystal clear. Don’t bluff or give a general answer. This round will be very easy to clear if you are good listener rather than a good speaker.

Day 3(HR interview):
Around 500 candidates cleared GD. But it was impossible to finish interview for 500 people within night. So HR asked Chennai candidates and boys from outstation of 11:00 A.M and 2:00 P.M batches to attend interview on 1st August, 2010 morning. He said it was going to be a formality and we are almost placed in HCL. I went home went to bed early to be fresh in the morning.

I reached college at 8:00 A.M next day. I interacted with candidates and they told that yesterday it was one to one interview and no technical questions were asked. But to our surprise for us it was one to four interview (1 HR and 4 candidates).
My batch went inside and we were the second batch. They called us based on first come first serve basis.
HR: Sanith tell me your education background?
Me: B.E E.C.E sir
HR: E.C.E? What is E.C.E?
Me: Electronics and Communication eng
HR: How do I know E.C.E stands for Electronics and Communication eng? (With a raised voice and a stern look he asked. At that moment I realized it was going to be stress interview and I have to maintain keep my head cool)
Me: Everyone here knows that E.C.E stands for Electronics and Communication eng sir. That’s why I said E.C.E. (With a smile)
HR: Oh is it? If I’m from Africa how will I know E.C.E? (His stern penetrated my eyes)
Me: (A billion dollar smile was my reply).

Like this he was testing our cool for half an hour and said based on this interview HCL is not going to select us but based on our aptitude scores, GD and Graduation marks we will be selected. And results will be sent through mail if we are selected after 2 days he said.

For 2 days I was praying day and night. But mail did not come to any of the candidates whom I met in college. On 3rd day i.e. on 4th August, 2010 exactly at 12:00 noon I received mail that I have been selected in HCL technologies. I think out of 500 candidates who attended HR interview more than 400+ got selected.

I thought I was going to break world record of attending maximum number of interviews (20+) but thank god I got selected by No: 1 employer in Asia.

So tips to those who read my experience:
1. Never lose hope and be always positive as SRK said in Om shanthi Om all movies will have a happy ending if not then climax is yet to come.
2. R.S.Aggrawal is the holy book for clearing aptitude. If possible go through GRE barron book.
3. Walk English, drink English, eat English, think English, ran English do everything In English to clear GD.
4. Understand the concepts of what you know. No need to be jack of the all trades but be master in 2 or 3 subjects. Be confident and calm. Say no if you cannot answer and never bluff. Answer in such a way that it diverts HR to the area in which you are strong. Always smile which gives a positive attitude.
5. And making new friends while attending interview is good. It will relax you and the person whom you are meeting. If you cannot clear interview stay in touch with them so that he/she will tell you about opportunity in any other company or help you out in future after getting job.
I hope that my HCL experience was useful to you. Please share your interview experience and placement papers in this website so that it’ll be helpful for others. Wishing you all the success and great careers
